What is place-based curriculum?
Place-based curriculum pro-actively uses the local area and its rich resources for teaching and learning.
It recognises that place really matters in learning!
What is the Place-based Curriculum Subgroup?
We are a group of cultural providers and teachers who want to work together to enrich the curriculum and are particularly interested in place-based learning.
We want to bring cultural providers, schools, teachers, children and young people together to use the local area and its rich resources to excite and deepen learning experiences and contribute to raising achievement and developing creativity.
What we want to do
Our vision is for children, young people and their families to delight in using the city itself and all of its natural and cultural resources as an exciting “classroom for learning”.
We would like:

Why place-based curriculum?
Research has shown that with a generalised curriculum, teachers struggle to find exciting and real resources for learning and children can find it difficult to make meaningful connections with learning and with their city because their own lives are ignored.
Yet there are a wealth of local resources on our doorsteps to make learning outside and inside the classroom come alive and a wealth of expertise in the city’s cultural organisations who are keen to contribute to deep learning experiences and an enriched curriculum.
What is happening?
Almost every locality has a connection with World War 1. In 2014, we are inviting schools to find their own local link and to carry out a local area enquiry as part of our first city-wide place-based curriculum programme supported by Bristol’s cultural organisations.

We would like:
- More cultural and education providers planning and delivering a place-based curriculum together at a strategic level
- Schools achieving a better understanding of the range of place-based curriculum resources and opportunities available, and better able to influence the design and inclusion of place-based learning in the curriculum
- Teachers better able to navigate their local cultural offer and use local cultural providers and resources
- More schools, children and young people taking part in enquiry-led, active place-based learning, contextualised within the local, national and global story
- More children and young people from all backgrounds asking their own questions, finding and actively making connections with where they live, and through this developing a strong sense of place and belonging.

This will:
- develop new ideas and practice for Bristol on cross-curricular place-based learning
- start the mapping of local resources in the city
- collect a bank of enquiry questions that develop a strong sense of belonging and identity
- share best practice in place-based curriculum, perhaps through a tool kit and a conference
- inform a programme of CPD for schools and cultural organisations on place-based curriculum
- support a research study to inform place-based curriculum specifically for Bristol
